THE PROBLEM:
Millions of dogs are abandoned in animal shelters and thought to be “unadoptable” due to unwanted or simply misunderstood behaviors. With rehabilitation, many dogs can be saved from certain death and find “forever homes”. However, shelters and rescue organizations don’t have funding for rehab and training – meaning dogs are euthanized unnecessarily or end up returned to shelters due to failed adoptions.
THE VISION:
Our Rescue Rehab can help to bridge the gap at our existing boarding facility by offering:
In 2011, Doggy Hydeaway was formed by the Martinez/Douglass family who desired to provide excellent care to all dogs, regardless of their breed. Our long-time passion for all animals, passed down by Bill and Norrine Hyde, grandparents of Lori Martinez and Donny Douglass, gave the family an excellent beginning to develop their passion and experience and turn it into a business. Nick Martinez, Lori’s youngest son, also found that he had a true gift with dogs, a deep level of understanding of their true nature. Lori’s eldest son, Shaun Martinez, wanted to invest in his family so he helped purchase a beautiful 11-acre property in Valley Center. Within a year, rescue groups from San Diego, Orange and LA Counties had found us online and loved our philosophy and our mission.
After several years of helping rehabilitate hundreds of dogs, Nick chose to move to a new location and start his own behavior rehabilitation business called State of Mind Dog Psychology.
In 2015, Lori and Donny had an opportunity to purchase a well-established kennel-free boarding, day camp, grooming and training facility called Two Paws Up.
Fast forward 9 years, Two Paws Up is thriving under their care, and Nick has decided to once again join forces with Two Paws Up by relocating to the Two Paws Up/Doggy Hydeaway property in Valley Center, continuing to run State of Mind Dog Psychology, as well as utilizing his incredible skills as part of Doggy Hydeaway Rescue Rehab, Inc., a 501 (c) 3 non-profit that is actively working to help dogs in our local community and surrounding areas including San Diego, Orange, Riverside and Los Angeles Counties.
Our facility has been a part of the Valley Center community since 2005. The one-acre property was purchased as a “blank slate” with only a manufactured home and a shed on the land by the previous owner of Two Paws Up, Ms. Jeanne Miller. She built out the property as a kennel-free facility that includes 8’ tall wood slat fencing around the perimeter, double gated entrances at each gate, and chain link fencing inside the facility to separate the large area into 9 separate yards to use as needed by the staff.
Several outbuildings are attached to the fenced yards that are used for feeding, storing of dogs' belongings, and for sleeping dogs. We have the ability to group-sleep dogs who are friendly and social, as well as large comfortable rooms or kennels to sleep individual dogs who cannot be left unmonitored overnight.
Large, covered patios are located in several areas around the property, providing a cool area for staff and dogs to hang out. Misters and large industrial fans have been installed for the hot summer months, which lower the temperature on the patios by 10 degrees. The property has beautiful, large trees that provide natural shade.
We also have an above-ground pool that is 4’ deep, located in a completely fenced area and always monitored by staff members when in use. The pool is a huge hit with the dogs! For those dogs who are not swimmers, we also provide kiddy pools in the yard. For safety, we have a clicker-controlled wrought iron gate at the entrance of the facility, as well as a nice parking lot for customers to use.
Cot beds are scattered throughout the yards, a big trampoline and doggy play station are also in the yard for dogs to play on. All dogs have access to a large building we call the Cabana, where they can get out of the heat or the cold and rest in a climate-controlled setting.
In order to accommodate all dogs in our care, we have the ability to utilize more private yards and sleeping areas, including using crates if necessary. Safety is our number one priority! We know that some of the dogs we will be rehabilitating are not dog friendly, so we have specific areas dedicated with their comfort in mind.

Dogs completely rely on us for everything they need, and it’s up to us to learn the basics of Dog Psychology so we can give these wonderful, loving animals a balanced, happy life. Unfortunately, many humans don’t realize they cause or contribute to a dog’s imbalance. Dogs are dumped at the pound for being badly behaved, too noisy, too aggressive, too anxious, too time-consuming, and more. All these excuses can be remedied with rehabilitation and training.
What we do is a huge undertaking, and we are 100% committed and passionate about helping as many dogs and humans as we can. This is not a 9 to 5 job, but we are all okay with that. Our love for these amazing creatures far surpasses our selfish needs. We are very excited to be a part of positive change in every dog we have the pleasure of working with, AND the dedicated humans who love them.
Non-profit Doggy Hydeaway Rescue Rehab seeks immediate funding to:
Please reach us at doggyhydeawayRR@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
We offer rehabilitation services to rescue groups for dogs they save but are then deemed "unadoptable" due to minor or severe behavior issues such as aggression towards humans and/or dogs, leash aggression, or bad habits that create a problem in a home. We also offer financial assistance (to be determined on an individual basis) to individuals who need rehabilitation services and training for minor or severe behavior issues, or for vet bills to help cover wellness exams, vaccines, spay/neuter surgery, or life-saving surgeries that would extend the life of that dog but the owner does not have thousands in the bank to pay for the surgery.
We base our decision to charge for any of our services on the financial situation of each individual or the rescue group. We want to help the overpopulation of the dog community by making spay/neuter surgeries easier for low income people to achieve. We know that the cost of surgeries is astronomical and often leads to a very loved dog being relinquished to the shelter or euthanized because the owner cannot afford the life saving surgery that is required. We will take each case very seriously, but we do not promise anything until each case has been evaluated.
We are a non-profit organization that uses donations to fund most of the services we offer. Any money we do receive for services goes directly back into the donation fund so we can continue to help those who need it the most.
We require a phone consultation prior to any dog coming to our facility. Please fill out the email form below and allow 24-48 hours for a return call or email. Also, please give a detailed description of the reason for your inquiry. We promise to get back to you as soon as we can!
